The Dialect Departments

The Swedish Institute for Language and Folklore* is a public authority commissioned to give guidance on modern Swedish usage and to increase the knowledge about dialects, onomastics and folklore.

At the Institute there are four departments working with dialects, in Gothenburg, Lund, Umeå and Uppsala. We have an extensive dialect material, in the form of both written records and sound recordings in our archives. Our work is directed towards processing, preserving and expanding our collections, and towards researching dialects and informing others about them.

*The Institute is formerly known as The Institute for Dialectology, Onomastics and Folklore Research (SOFI).
